History

In the early 1990’s The Council of the Clan Munro (Association), set about raising funds from their worldwide membership with the aim of creating a Clan heritage centre somewhere in the old Clan territory and in 1995 they formed Clan Munro Heritage Ltd (CMHL), a Scottish charitable company limited by guarantee (SC159810) whose principle aims are to advance the education of the general public concerning the Clan Munro and the social and natural history of the Ferindonald and Cromarty Firth areas.

In 1997 CMHL took a 99 year lease of the five acre site known as Foulis Ferry, sandwiched between the A9, the main trunk road between Inverness & Wick and the Cromarty Firth and less than a mile from Foulis Castle.

The site at the time consisted of the original Ferryman’s Cottage which had been converted 20 years previously into a small roadside restaurant and the historic C18th girnal (grainstore) known as The Storehouse of Foulis. Using the funds raised by the Clan and with help from The National Heritage Memorial Fund, Ross & Cromarty Enterprise, Historic Scotland, and The Highland Council they redeveloped the Ferryman’s Cottage into a first class restaurant and shop and transformed the Storehouse into a fascinating multi-media exhibition telling the story of Clan Munro, the Storehouse itself and the natural history of the area. Above the exhibition space there is a reference library of all matters relating to the Clan Munro and a studyroom which is available to hire.

The Centre was officially opened in late 1998 by Donnie Munro the lead singer of the Celtic rock band Runrig and won the top award for building design for 1999 from ‘The Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland’.
