The Bake HouseWe are delighted to offer this new luxurious self-catering apartment converted for the Munro family’s own private use over the past three years by a mastercraftsman. However for the time being the family have decided to offer this very special and unique living space for holiday lets. The superbly finished Bake House forms an integral part of the Castle courtyard walls and has seen many changes over the centuries. In the recent past an important service building, housing the bake house, dairy, a stable, gun room and accommodation for a coachman, it has now been turned into a magnificent four bedroomed living space whilst still retaining original features such as the C18th bread oven, flagstone floors throughout the ground floor and the narrow arrow slit windows in the bare stone walls of the old defensive tower found during the renovation works. The whole apartment is as warm as toast, heated using some of the latest technology provided by a ground source heat pump and offers an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of living in a real Castle in the utmost comfort. You enter via a stepped and ramped access from the Castle driveway through a wide double entrance doorway, into a lobby off which there is a groundfloor double bedroom over looking the charming courtyard garden, with an adjacent wc, shower/steamroom and utility room. From the very start the care and attention to detail is clearly evident. Passing through the fully equipped utility room you enter into a huge, beautifully appointed open plan kitchen/living/dining space, with a wood burning stove, comfortable armchairs, breakfast bar and the original bread oven, with all the windows overlooking the courtyard garden. At the south end of the kitchen a flight of stone stairs leads down to the atmospheric dining room and here you really feel you are in a Castle, as it is the base of one of the old defensive towers with it’s arrow slits, thick walls, ancient flagged floor, stout doors, wood burning stove, arched window and low ceiling. It is a delight with soft lighting and just crying our for a large dinner party! The fine oak table can easily seat twelve. Returning up the stone staircase to the kitchen a timber staircase set into the old external wall of the tower, leads you up to a half landing and the magnificent two storey drawing room finely furnished and hung with family portraits with a big welcoming open fireplace. It was once the upper part of one of the four towers on the Castle curtain wall and more recently a coachman’s living quarters. Twin doors lead to an external staircase and the romantic Castle courtyard garden. From the half landing, five steps lead to a passage off which there are three very comfortable bedrooms (two doubles ensuite and a twin with adjacent bathroom) again overlooking the courtyard garden. The whole is a fascinating mix of old and new. Regretably being an historic ‘A’ listed building it has not been possible to provide proper disabled access but the owners have thoughtfully provided the one bedroom, wc and shower on the ground floor. The doorway into the kitchen/living area is narrow but the stone steps to the dining room are wide. Unfortunately, access to the 1st floor is not suitable for those with a disability.
